Re: South Burlington Democrat’s Forum of 7/9/26 for CHI-SE Senate Candidates

The South Burlington Democrats vehemently condemn an accusation made by a community member during our forum for Senate candidates on July 9, 2026. The accusation singled out candidate Joanna Grossman based on her religious identity. By invoking an antisemitic argument and using an attacking tone toward her as an individual, this discourse was and is unacceptable.

We sincerely apologize to Joanna Grossman for the deep harm inflicted. We further apologize that we compounded the harm by failing to stand up in the moment. She stood up to hate with poise and dignity, and we should have done more to support her.

We hoped to generate open, civil, and thoughtful engagement from the public on important local questions. This personal and identity-based attack not only smeared one candidate, causing her great harm, it also harmed the community and our committee’s efforts.  We apologize for allowing an unrestricted format for public questions. We understand now how we can do better in the future with the people and the process.

We ask that Vermonters join us in calling out hate speech and personal attacks for the damage they cause, both in the moment and over the long term.
